Planning your first Virgin Voyages cruise? The boarding day experience can make or break the start of your vacation. After sailing with Virgin Voyages multiple times, I have learned all the insider tips and tricks to make your embarkation day smooth and stress-free. Let me walk you through everything you need to know about boarding day at the Port of Miami.
Getting to the Port of Miami: Timing and Transportation Tips
Arriving by Car or Rideshare
If you’re already in Miami, I recommend leaving no less than 30 minutes before your scheduled boarding time. Miami traffic can be absolutely brutal, especially around the port area. Trust me on this one – you do not want to be stuck in traffic watching your boarding window slip away.

For those flying in on boarding day (which I strongly advise against, but sometimes life happens), book the earliest possible flight. This gives you backup options if there are delays. When using rideshare services like Uber or Lyft, make sure to specify Terminal V – that’s Virgin Voyages’ dedicated terminal.
Parking at the Port
If you’re driving to the terminal, head straight to Parking Garage G. It’s covered parking at $25 per day (as of the time of this post) for cruise parking. There’s also parking Lot E for oversized vehicles at the same daily rate, though it’s uncovered. However, if your vehicle is oversized and takes up two parking spaces, expect to pay extra.
Porter Services and Luggage Handling
Once you reach the Virgin Voyages boarding area, you’ll meet the porter staff – and they’re fantastic. If you have bags to check, they’ll gladly take them off your hands. It’s customary to tip them for this service, and honestly, they earn it.
They ask to ensure you’re not carrying prohibited items and that your passport is not packed away in your checked bags. You’ll need that passport for check-in!
If you have oversized luggage, definitely hand it over to the porters. The security machines cannot accommodate large bags, and you’ll save yourself a headache. Your checked bags will be delivered directly to your cabin door later in the day.
Check-In and Security: The Ready to Sail Advantage
Timing Your Arrival

Do not arrive more than 30 minutes before your boarding time. If you show up too early, you might end up waiting outside in Miami’s heat. However, there’s a clever workaround: you can drop off luggage as early as 9 AM, then explore nearby Bayside marketplace. Virgin also started allowing you to check-in and obtain your wristband. This is such a time saver because when you return later to board, you can just head straight to security and then board the ship.
The City of Miami offers a free trolley from the port to Bayside, where you can shop, eat, and kill time until your boarding window opens. It’s much better than standing outside the terminal!
The Check-In Process

If you have completed all the “Ready to Sail” requirements in the Virgin Voyages app (and you absolutely should!), look for the big “Ready to Sail” banner upstairs. This line moves much faster because you have already handled the pre-check items.
During check-in, you’ll receive your wristband – this little device is your key to everything on the ship! After check-in, security is literally right next door, making the flow super smooth.
Security and Pre-Boarding
After clearing security, you’ll head up an escalator (or elevator) to a pre-boarding area. Sometimes they use this area to manage crowd flow during busy sailings, but often you’ll go straight through to the gangway.
When it’s time to board, they’ll call your group over the loudspeaker. You’ll scan your wristband at the machine, walk through those double doors, and boom – you’re on the gangway to your Virgin Voyages adventure.
Boarding the Ship: First Impressions Matter
The Virgin Voyages crew does an incredible job welcoming you aboard. As soon as you step off the gangway, you’re greeted with genuine enthusiasm. You’ll typically enter on Deck 7 at an area called “The Roundabout” – the elevators are right nearby to take you to your cabin.
Wi-Fi and the Virgin Voyages App

I tried connecting to Wi-Fi while still in the terminal, but it seems you need to be physically on the ship now. Once aboard, you can join the classic Wi-Fi which is included in your cruise fare or you can upgrade to premium Wi-Fi for $40 per day for a 24-hour pass or $30 per day for a Voyage Pass for one device. Each additional device would cost $15 each (prices and options subject to change).
Download the Virgin Voyages app before you even leave home. You can:
- Upload your photo and passport information
- Complete health check questionnaires
- Select your boarding time
- Make dining and entertainment reservations
- Track your bar tab and Sailor Loot spending during the cruise
Making Reservations: Reserve Early!

Here’s where timing becomes crucial. As soon as you board, find a comfortable spot and start booking your reservations. I’m talking about:
- Specialty dining restaurants (those that you have not already confirmed)
- Entertainment shows
- Fitness classes
- Spa treatments
- Tattoo parlor appointments (yes, they have one)
Reservations typically open 45 days before sailing for regular sailors (“guests”), or 60 days for Rockstar status sailors. If you’re having trouble with the app, head down to Sailor Services and the team there can book everything for you and even make recommendations based on your preferences.
Virgin Voyages holds back most availability until all sailors board, but popular restaurants, shows and fitness classes fill up quickly once everyone’s aboard. Do not wait!
Your Virgin Voyages Cabin: What to Expect

Your room is ready immediately upon boarding – no waiting around. Let me walk you through what you’ll find in a typical Central Sea Terrace cabin.
Room Layout and Features
Your wristband opens the door (no keycards here). Inside, you’ll find:
- A curtained closet with shelving and cube storage for suitcases
- A cabinet with safe, drawers, and shelves
- A desk with mirror where your daily water delivery awaits
- The in-room tablet controlling lights, TV, AC, and more
- A refrigerator for keeping drinks and snacks cool
- A European Queen bed (can split into twins if needed)
The Famous Red Hammock
Every Central Sea Terrace cabin (mostly all balcony cabins) features a private balcony with two chairs, a small table, and Virgin’s signature red hammock. Being in the middle of the ship on a lower deck is perfect if you’re prone to seasickness.
The bathroom is compact but well-designed. If you need more space, consider upgrading to the Extra-Large Central Sea Terrace – the bathroom is significantly larger.
The Essential Muster Drill
Every cruise line requires safety drills, and Virgin Voyages makes theirs actually engaging. You’ll need to:
- Watch the safety video through the app or in-room tablet
- Acknowledge completion for all sailors in your cabin
- Visit your muster station (location is on the back of your cabin door)
- Scan your wristband to check in
Virgin announces when muster stations open via the ship’s PA system. Once you have checked in at your station, you’re done and can start to enjoy your cruise.
The Legendary Sail Away Party
The Sail Away Party runs roughly from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM and happens primarily on Deck 15, but here’s an insider tip: Deck 16 has the best views.
You’ll be treated to:
- Complimentary champagne
- Meet the Happenings Cast (Virgin’s take on a cruise director, but with multiple cast members with different focuses)
- Live DJ and dancing
- Spectacular Miami skyline views as you depart
There’s a real sense of excitement as you sail out of Miami, glass of champagne in hand, surrounded by fellow travelers who are just as ready to begin the journey as you are.
